Looks, ladders
I will start of with the ladder theory. According to one of my friends, when a guy sees a girl for the first time, he basically places her on one ladder. This is in contrast with when a girl sees a guy, she will place him on two different ladders- the friend's ladder and the dateable ladder. Basically, if a guy is placed on the friend's ladder, he will remain there forever and ever and ever. Furthermore, if someone on the friend's ladder tries to cross over to the dateable ladder, well, he will fall off both ladders and suffer a lingering, horrible death.
How does looks come into the picture? Well, since from the ladder theory, from the first impression, the girl would already place the guy on a certain ladder, a collary would be that looks are extremely important since these give the first impression. As my friend puts it, only ugly people think looks are not important.
I have always thought that looks are not important. But now that I think about it, that could because everyone has a minimum standard of looks required and my standard, is probably really low. Long hair, acceptable shape, don't look like Frankenstein (too bad, Ernie, you don't have long hair. You only have fur and paws.) would do.
